Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene

The opening Shots are filmed in my living room. I chose my living room because of the ease of access and I chose a living room because it is the conventional room for when a family watches the TV. One problem that I encountered is that the lighting in the Living room is poor. There are no real hazards or risks in my living room as well as it being cost free as it was in my house.

This is a photo of the theatre at my college. It is where I have filmed my newsroom scenes. I chose the theatre because it represents the theatrics of the news world and because I needed an easily accessible large room space, which could fit a newsroom set in it. There are only a few hazards and risks that I needed to be careful of for example jack leads, which were being used to look like the performance was legitimate. Another risk was the camera equipment. There was a large amount of expensive equipment which actors and artists needed to be aware and careful of when near. One of the problems I encountered whilst filming here was that there were long periods of time where certain actors were waiting and they were not being entertained. In future when I shoot in the theatre then I will do one or two actors in a session over a shorter period of time. Another problem encountered was that, because there was so much filming to get through, the time allocated of 2 hours was not enough and I could not stay later due to the college closing at 6. However, one advantage is that filming at college is free. Here is a picture of the distance and journey from my home to Wyke College, which is the location of the theatre.

Here is an image of my brother in the Peak District. This is one of the shot locations of my film. I wanted to film in the Peak District because I needed a mountainous area. I chose this specific location in the Peaks because of its scenic topography. It has a peculiar tree near to the top and under the tree is a strange hobbit hole. Its abnormality and mysteriousness made it perfect to represent the message of knowledge and learning that I am trying to portray. It was both difficult and easy to organize film here. It was easy because my brother lives in Sheffield and very close to the Peak District, however getting to Sheffield from Hull is quite difficult for someone who cannot drive. Although, my parents wanted to see my brother, so they offered to drive me to Sheffield and then take us both into the Peaks. One of the hazards that came with filming in this location was that the weather made the ground slippy and difficult to film. A video below shows an example of my lead actor slipping it was hilarious but a very dangerous risk, which could not be completely prevented but it could be minimised. Here is the distance and route from my home to the peak district.

Cinematography

Cinematography is the art of camera movement, position, angles and framing to express what is happening in the shot. It is a very important aspect of film making otherwise it leads to confusion for the viewer.

Developing Narrative Into Moving Image

Narrative:

Start - Family being consumed by the TV

Point 1 - They're being consumed by a news station by a puppet

Point 2 - One of the brothers of the family is released from his imprisonment

Point 3 - It is revealed that there is a rich man in a suit controlling what the family see

Point 4 - The brother goes on a journey of knowledge up a mountain, sees that the world is beautiful and learns what he needs to do to save it.

Point 5 - The brother returns to his family to inform his family of what he has learned

End - Brother goes to news station to kill the man in the suit but is killed by his father

Narrative (media techniques):

Start - Extreme close ups of families faces to establish characters together being consumed by the TV

Point 1 Technique - Zoom to TV screen transitioning into news room shot with walking forwards shot of the puppet and artist

Point 2 Technique - Close up shot of brother's face as sunlight strikes his eyes

Point 3 Technique - High angle shot over the desk of man in suit

Point 4 Technique -

This was a 10 minute challenge. I found it difficult because trying to think of media language which represents my narrative is difficult when the message you are trying to show is in what the audience sees.

Inspiration

I like this music video because is has a powerful message. The camera movement represents this message as the first half of the video the camera is following Mac's face as it shows him showing the world who he really wants to be. In the second half of the video, the camera is chasing him as it shows the world rejecting who he really is.

The feature of this video is that it is in reverse and points out an excellent message that we shouldn't assume a story until we've seen what's happened at the end. I believe it to be referencing domestic abuse cases where the assumption is that the initiator is the woman as she is the vulnerable easy target. When actually the man's cruelty provoked the attack.  The story has no context until the end of the song. Although, the interpretation of this video is purely subjective. Perhaps the woman has previously provoked the man. That is what makes it a successful music video, its ability to make you think. It does this using an editing technique which is why clever editing has such an important influence on a successful music video. I will try to apply clever editing to my video in an attempt to make it successful.

Audience Research

What I did for my audience research was to first split the participants of the questionnaire into two. One that likes the genre that i m thinking of making my music video for, and one that doesn't. This led to me successfully finding my demographic/target audience. Finding this helps my define my products and pinpoint creative aspects of my design. I found that the demographic that listens to indie alternative jazz tends to be between 18 and 25, working class or lower middle class, enjoys a narrative with a deeper meaning and prefers a classic more alternative style of clothing. Meaning that i should make a film with an anti patriarchy political and social message with an alternative indie clothing style.
